ROOTS & ARTS SHIRAOI
A ‘co-creation tourism project’ that aims to create
the future of tourism and cultural resources.
ROOTS — It features the culture, folklore,
and human activities rooted in Shiraoi.
ARTS — It rediscovers, re-edits, and reconstructs them
as an expression through communication
between residents and Shiraoi’s diverse visitors.
- Artist in Residence
- In artist-in-residence programs, artists stay in an area for a certain period of time to create works and/or conduct research activities in a cultural environment that is different from their own. This year, ROOTS & ARTS SHIRAOI will carry out fieldwork and plan art installations that utilize vacant stores and spaces in Shiraoi. With special consideration for COVID-19 prevention, we are planning to develop our project with selected artists based in Hokkaido with experience working overseas. (Scheduled from late August to early October)
- Sirkio Project
- Sirkio means “patterned” in the Ainu language.Artists and illustrators will conduct fieldwork and research focusing on the myths, folklore, and the local history of the land and community of Shiraoi. The project, which started in 2018, aims to bring to life the stories of the local community as artworks through the eyes of each artist. The artists will seek suitable places for their work to be exhibited.
- UTARI
- Audio content「Radio Utari」 delivered live for only 3 days. Introducing world music, traditional performing arts, and local culture with Ainu musician OKI as a DJ. Every time we invite special guests with various specialties, we will talk deeply with the core.
- Radio Project
- This is a radio program from Shiraoi Town. The four personalities will provide you with deep information about Shiraoi Town from a unique perspective. Please listen.
Located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido,
Shiraoi is an idyllic town full of nature,
including forests, sea, rivers, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls.
The name "Shiraoi" is said to have originated
from the Ainu language.
The slogan of the town is "multicultural coexistence”.
Shiraoi is not only home for
UPOPOY (National Ainu Museum & Park)
— a hub for the revival, creation,
and development of Ainu culture —
but to series of sights such as Ayorohana Lighthouse
that overlooks the horizon of the Pacific Ocean,
farms where cows and horses graze right next to the street,
and a town full of tradition and new culture.
Shiraoi is a place that inspires people.
